I primed the castings with self-etching primer. Some auto body putty was also used. The castings were then painted with Acrylic Auto paint, using an airbrush. The finished engine is shown on the following pages.
One item that presented some difficulty (until I came up with a method), was to paint the stripe on the flywheels. There is no way I could have done it freehand! I first tried to use a paint pen that had a metal ball, like a ballpoint. It tended to dig into the base finish. I almost resorted to using tape for the stripe. Then I found another type of paint pen at MSC. It has a sort of fiber tip, like the ink markers do. I fastened the flywheel to a rotary table, and inserted the paint pen in an end mill holder. The paint pen tip will recess if pushed, so it was an easy step to get the right amount of pressure, then rotate the table. Viola! A perfect stripe. Three coats were used, drying overnite between applications.
