THE UPSHUR FARM ENGINE
I wonder how many of these have been built?  A very popular engine, especially for a newbie like me.  This was my  second IC engine, not quite done yet.  Plans were obtained from back issues of SIC Magazine.  I need to make a base for the Gas Tank yet.  I also think I might try some pinstripe decals to accent it a little.  It is finally running very well, although the Carb is REALLY TOUCHY.  It is the second carb for this engine,( I modified the original a little).   When I was about to start construction, I decided to try and make the frame from a "Lost Foam" casting. It turned out Great!  Actually, I made two.  The first one was fine, and I had it half machined, when I decided to make another, hopefully more authentic looking.  The difference was that I made it with large fillets around where the frame connects to the base, as well as inside the frame.  The frame and base are one piece, as shown in the casting photos. There are several pages to this engine, I keep them short to make download times shorter.
This is the foam pattern.  It is made from standard home insulation foam, cut with a "hot wire" cutter.  The walls are aprox 1/4" thick, the base is about 3/4". I cut the pattern to make it look more like a realistic old engine.
This is the pattern with a sprue atached to the bottom.  I used a cut-up beer can for the sprue.

When I finish my Foundry Pages, lots of these techniques will be explained in more detail.
Here is the foam pattern for the engine.   Chassis and base are one-piece.
