Trimming the sides of the bearing cap castings. They still need to be reduced in height, but the sides need to be parallel to grip them in a vise. |

I marked out the approximate location of the bearing, to see how much stock needed to be removed from the bearing cap.. |

Here is the cylinder with the slot in the bottom, along with the base after milling it to the correct height. The liner will be at right angles to the con rod, and aligned with the centerline.. I used Dykem to check for high spots. |

Removing excess stock from the bottom of the Bearing Caps. I superglued them together prior to clamping them in the vise, to guarantee they would be the same height. |

The cylinder block was fastened to the base, and the 0.875 piece of drill rod was again inserted into the liner. The assembly was fixed to an angle plate. The drill rod was then aligned parallel to the table using a DTI, to assure that the holes for the bearings will be at exactly 90 degrees to the connecting rod (when inserted) |

Boring the holes for the ball bearings. The distance from the front of the cylinder to the bearing centerline was measured, to get a close as possible to the design length of the con rod but still center in in the "hub" of the bearing cap. It looks like I will have to make the con rod aproximately 0.100 shorter. The hole was centered over the mating surface of the cap and base.. Almost goofed here, I was in a hurry and "eyeballed" the spot for the center drill. Then realized I should really have located off the actual surface with the bearing cap removed. After drilling, I removed the cap, rechecked and positioned with a center finder, reinstalled the bearing cap, and then finished boring the hole. It would have been off about .010, glad I checked. |
