MACHINING THE THIMBOL AND GOVERNOR COLLAR |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cutting a groove in the Thimbol using one of the special cutters. I had drilled and reamed it first. A dial indicator with a magnetic back was used on the carriage to determine the distance between grooves, and overall length. |

Boring the center hole of the Governor collar. When bored it will be cutoff to the proper thickness. |

Drilling the holes for the pins, after milling was completed, and the workpiece was removed from the baseplate. The sides of the towers rest on the vise, guaranteeing that the holes will be perpendicular. I used a parallel when milling the side slots. It was thicker that the height of the towers, providing a means of clamping the collar in the vise without damaging them, and guaranteeing that the slots would line up |

Milling the face of the Governor Collar. The blank was laid out, Superglued to an Aluminum baseplate, and then centered under the milling spindle. The width of the inner slot (not shown) is an oddball width. Turns out that I had an endmill that had been resharpened, and the resulting width of it was perfect, allowing the cut to be made in one pass. If I would not had that particluar endmill, I would have ground the flutes on one to arrive at the proper size. Heating the piece with a torch will allow removal from the baseplate when done. |
